Insulting Compliments

“You are brave,” she says. “You don’t need me to say it, because you already know it. But I want you to know that I know.” She is complimenting me, but I still feel like she smacked me with something. Then she adds, “Don’t mess it up.”

Insurgent (Divergent Book 2) by Veronica Roth

    1. The speaker is Tris Prior. The person she’s talking to is a member of dauntless who Tris has never really gotten along with. I will have to look up the name when i get home tonight.

      1. That’s actually what i meant. Maybe narrator is a better word? Anyhow, the person giving Tris the compliment is a member of dauntless. Sadly i still do not remember the name. More later!

    2. With a library copy of the noel in hand, I am ready and able to answer this question! 🙂

The conversation is between Lynn and Tris. According to the eBook version, it occurs on pages 169-170.

Two paragraphs before this quote, Lynn says: “No matter how long you train someone to be brave, you never know if they are or not until something real happens.”

Not sure why I didn’t highlight that one – because it’s a good one.
