Insulting Compliments

“You are brave,” she says. “You don’t need me to say it, because you already know it. But I want you to know that I know.” She is complimenting me, but I still feel like she smacked me with something. Then she adds, “Don’t mess it up.”

    • The speaker is Tris Prior. The person she’s talking to is a member of dauntless who Tris has never really gotten along with. I will have to look up the name when i get home tonight.

    • With a library copy of the noel in hand, I am ready and able to answer this question! 🙂

The conversation is between Lynn and Tris. According to the eBook version, it occurs on pages 169-170.

Two paragraphs before this quote, Lynn says: “No matter how long you train someone to be brave, you never know if they are or not until something real happens.”

Not sure why I didn’t highlight that one – because it’s a good one.
