Choose Your Leaders

Quote

“Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought.
To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool.
To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen.
To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.”

Octavia E. Butler, Parable of the Talents

Safety Changes

Cettie’s room at Fog Willows was above the kitchen, and it overlooked the entire manor. It had belonged to her tormentor, Mrs. Pullman, years ago, and she’d worried bad memories would assail her. But Mrs. Harding, who had fulfilled the duties of keeper after Mrs. Pullman and before Cettie, had worked some sort of magic on the place. She had completely redecorated it and even turned the drafty, dusty garret above the room into a pleasant space with windows and rugs and end tables and small bookshelves. The space that had once belonged to Cettie’s enemy, the woman who’d attempted to control and quiet her, was now her safe haven.

Standing Right Side Up in an Upsidedown World

Gylfie’s directness shocked Soren. He stopped blinking and looked straight at the Elf Owl. “Look. What did I just tell you? Everything here at St. Aggie’s is upside down and inside out. It’s our job not to get moon blinked and to stand right side up in an upsidedown world. If we don’t do that we’ll never be able to escape. We’ll never be able to think. And thinking is the only way we’ll be able to plan an escape.”

Worrying Into Reality

Quote

…it seems like worrying is something I feel like I have to do, that maybe worrying about them actually keeps them alive and real.

Then she recognized it for what it was. Like her worrying, a useless belief that by thinking a certain way, she could make it so.

Profile of Sohini Chakraborty, India

“I am not teaching dance; I am inspiring dignity and self-respect.”

“Girls who are the victims of violence and sexual trafficking are extremely uncomfortable with their bodies,” Sohini explains. “They don’t feel physicality because they feel it is responsible for the stigma attached to them.”

“In the brothel, you have no control over your body,” she explains. “But when you dance, you are the one giving expression to your body. You are controller of your body, of your mind, of your expression. It’s freedom.”

“They’re tryin’ to take away my pride
By stripping me of everything I own
They’re tryin’ to hurt me inside
And make me into a white man’s drone”

And I was born to fight”

Risk and Control

Quote

She tried to get her panic under control. What was wrong with her? She wasn’t a person who got scared easily. She was competent and strong. She could take care of herself. But not in a situation like this, a situation in which her skills meant nothing and she had no control over the risks involved. That, she realized abruptly, was what she disliked. The risks were wildly out of her control.
